Black Leaders of Influence: A Night Celebrating Community Impact; By Jazzmin Austin

The Black Leaders of Influence event in San Diego brought together a powerful cross-section of leaders who are driving change across the region. The event consisted of people whose work touches education, finance, healthcare, automotive, fitness, and more. The evening honored individuals from many sectors for their dedication to uplifting the community. Highlighted by the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce and affiliates of the University Club, atop of Symphony Towers, showcased the best of in the community, as well as the views of San Diego.

Event Highlights and Connections

Among those in attendance was Henry Foster III, a local leader whose presence underscored the event’s focus on civic engagement and community service. I had the opportunity to connect with the president of the Urban League, share fellowship with Dr. Lawanda Richardson, and congratulate Tammy T, an award recipient representing the Blue Heart Foundation. The atmosphere was celebratory and purposeful, with many attendees exchanging ideas and building partnerships to strengthen San Diego’s neighborhoods.

Educators Networking at City College

Following the awards, I attended the Educators Networking event at City College, where Ricky Shabazz also an awardee at the Black Leaders of Influence event helped bring educators and community leaders together. A panel featuring Henry Foster III and Monica Montgomery Steppe explored the challenges of working in politics and public service. Panelists described how they push the envelope and refuse to accept “no” when advocating for constituents. When asked what he was most proud of, Henry Foster III acknowledged his role in supporting Monica’s successful run for county supervisor, and the conversation highlighted her work to ensure access to programs like Medi-Cal, EBT, and foster care so that no community member is left behind.

Takeaways

• Community leadership matters  the event showcased how leaders across industries collaborate to create tangible change.
• Relationships drive progress  conversations with the Urban League, Blue Heart Foundation, and local educators reinforced the value of partnership.
• Public service is persistent work  the panel emphasized perseverance and practical advocacy to expand access to essential services.
